Ukraine is blessed with fertile “black earth” that makes the country the breadbasket to much of the world, both now and in ancient times. The ancient Greeks cultivated groves of olives which they turned into olive oil. They able to devote vast tracts of land to a non-essential crop, like olives, because they were importing staple grains, for bread and pasta, from the land across the Black Sea: Ukraine. The Greeks called this mystical region the “Elysian Fields” or “Ambrosia.”
Wheat has always been an important part of Ukrainian mythology. Look at the Ukrainian flag: a blue stripe above a yellow stripe. Blue signifies the sky, and yellow represents a field of wheat.
